Lake Oahe / Sharpe

The Walleye bite on Oahe is fair right now. Some days you can land on them and do well but other days its one here and one there. I have been fishing out to 50 / 60 foot on the calmer days and up around 25 foot when the wind blows and the mudlines start going. LOTS of baitfish in Oahe right now and all those Walleyes are feeding heavily which makes the bite tougher. Bouncers and crawlers are my main bait of choice but pulling plugs out deep with leadcore is putting a few really nice ones in the box right too..
Now the Smallmouth Bass on the other hand are going crazy up shallow. Lots of really nice 17 to 20 inch Bass in Oahe. Super shallow bite here... 5 to 20 foot. I am having my best luck on Bass with live minnows. I seem to find most of them suspended around saddles and rocky humps with deep water nearby. Super fun as these fish are fighters who battle you all the way to the boat. Don't overlook this fishery as its world class.
Sharpe is going good for Walleyes and Smallmouth Bass. The best bite is on the main lake from Degray on down. I have been fishing the Lower Brule side and have been doing well. My Walleye bite has been along the channel edges and sunken islands and humps in 12 to 25 foot of water. The Smallmouth are up a bit shallower in 15 foot or less. Bouncers / crawlers for Walleyes and crankbaits on the Bass. There is some really nice 15 to 19 inch Bass in Sharpe right now. Fun. With steady weather the bite on Sharpe is good but if you hit some storms and cold fronts the bite is much tougher. Keep at it and the fish will come. Its been a great year for Lake Sharpe.
I have been getting ALOT of phone calls and emails asking if I go to the dock as soon as we limit on Walleyes. I have NEVER done that in my 22 years of professional guiding. I FISH A FULL 8 HOUR DAY and we fish for ALL SPECIES of fish. Those people have been ripped off and I don't blame them for being upset. There is lots of other species of fish to for and we practice catch and release all day long. I cut the hooks on my deep hooked fish and mainly chase Smallmouth after we limit on Walleyes. Don't let anyone tell you that there is no bite other than Walleye. The Bass limits are quite liberal and limits of Walleyes and Smallmouth on the same day is not that uncommon. I fish for EVERYTHING for a FULL DAY! Walleyes, Smallmouth, Northern Pike... Whatever is biting... This is YOUR trip and I am going to give you your moneys worth. I have been a professional fishing guide for 22 years and will not rip you off like that. You get what you pay for here.
I had a very unpleasant experience with a highly intoxicated client the other day. Extremely intoxicated at 6:30 AM. I cancelled the trip as I am not risking my customers safety, my safety and my business on that. I do not mind RESPONSIBLE drinking on the boat at all but this was the saddest thing I have seen in 22 years of guiding. I will not tolerate nor allow extremely intoxicated people on my boat. Period.
